Uncanny valley. They do not look human, but if you see them out of the corner of your eye, you could be forgiven for looking over them. Their eyes are slits and they have no visible mouth, and their bodies look like they shouldn't hold them.

I rarely have nightmares, but when I do, they feature. But you are correct: they could look like anything. The projection I saw could have been modified to give them more gravitas.
They managed an non-hostile takeover without setting foot here, tricking us into doing the work for them. Life would have been easier if they were stupider or humans were less easy to manipulate.
