Tell me why you don't like Valentine's Day.

Do you remember what Valentine's was like in pres cities, all of the window dressings with none of the affection or intensity?

I do. But we're not in a pres city now.

This is only my third time in twenty years watching people celebrate it properly, forgive me if it takes a while for my rougher edges to smooth out. Old grudges and all.

Let me begin by acknowledging that I'm very well aware not everyone approaches the holiday with equal deliberation. There have always been men dashing into a CVS at the eleventh hour for a bundle of carnations and a tube of Maybelline that does not match their wife's complexion in the slightest.

And yet it remains a day when one is permitted — even expected — to indulge a more theatrical type of romance. Yes, of course, you should show your partner or partners appreciation every day. Obviously. But this is the occasion for grandeur! For declarations! For feeling expressed at full volume rather than politely restrained! Intensity is not excessive on Valentine's Day — it is the point. Spectacle is often hollow, but on THIS one day it is meant in earnest. You can recite a poem, serenade a lover, proclaim devotion in the most extravagant manner imaginable. Even if you strike out, it's Valentine's Day. That's what it's for.

On top of all that, I find it rather moving to observe people in love — the young, the old, and everyone in between. It's why I didn't make too much of a fuss over the kissing booth taking place in the library. It fosters a certain [...] optimism in me. No matter how bleak things may appear, love persists. Despite the Architects' best attempts to stamp it out, it manages to exist anyway, even for worn and somewhat broken men like myself.

Now, before you accuse me of sentimentality, I will borrow from Fitzgerald, who said it best: "I'm not sentimental — I'm as romantic as you are. The idea, you know, is that the sentimental person thinks things will last, while the romantic person has a desperate confidence that they won't."
