3. Because the idea that he would go to Madrid without informing either Philip or me is infuriating beyond articulation. The idea that he would beg forgiveness upon his return is a pipe dream, too.

I can't conceive of a reality in which he expected me to stand idly by while you and Philip wondered where he'd gotten to for three days. He knew what he was doing when he told me: either I convince him to tell you, as I did; I brand myself untrustworthy by doing it myself; or I do nothing and when you find out in the aftermath, your opinion of me plummets.

As for #2, I wouldn't worry. My hopes weren't up for more than a [...] minute or two.

It doesn't sound vain, Dom. I cannot pretend that our situations are exactly the same, but I do understand what it's like to have your day-to-day life impacted by such a condition. I wish I could this away from you.
